What FSM Software Is

Field Service Management (FSM) software is the operating system for service contractors. It bundles what used to be five separate tools — scheduling, dispatching, customer database, invoicing, and mobile field operations — into one app.

The defining workflow: customer calls → CSR books job → dispatcher assigns tech → tech goes on-site with mobile app → tech captures photos / parts / signature → invoice generated → payment collected → record archives in CRM. Every modern FSM does this end-to-end loop.

The biggest examples: Jobber, Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan, FieldEdge, FieldPulse, Workiz, ServiceM8.

Who Needs FSM vs Who Doesn't

You need FSM if:

  • You have 2+ field techs and dispatch is your bottleneck
  • You're spending 5+ hours/week on invoicing
  • You can't remember what you quoted last week
  • Customers complain about "no one called me back"
  • You're doing $150K+ revenue and growing

You don't (yet):

  • You're truly solo and serve fewer than 100 customers a year
  • Your work is project-based with 1-3 active jobs (use construction PM instead — see below)
  • Your accounting is the bottleneck, not operations — start with QuickBooks Online first

Feature Categories That Matter

Core (every FSM has these)

  • Customer database (CRM)
  • Schedule + calendar with drag-and-drop dispatch
  • Mobile app for techs
  • Estimate / quote builder
  • Invoice + payment processing
  • Basic reporting

Mid-tier (separates serious from toy)

  • Two-way text messaging with customers
  • Automated booking reminders
  • QuickBooks Online sync (bidirectional)
  • Job costing per work order
  • Service agreement / recurring job automation
  • Photo + signature capture in mobile app

Advanced (where ServiceTitan-class platforms earn the premium)

  • Pricebook + flat-rate pricing engine — multi-option proposals lifting ticket size 15-30%
  • Call booking + CSR coaching analytics — measure CSR conversion rates
  • Source-tracked marketing — attribute every closed job back to marketing channel
  • Dispatch optimization — AI-suggested routing at scale
  • Pricebook Pro / industry library — pre-built flat-rate prices maintained quarterly
  • Wisetack / consumer financing integration — lifts $5K+ install close rates 20-30%

FSM vs Construction PM (Different Beasts)

FSM is built for service work — hours-to-days jobs, recurring customers, high call volume. Construction project management (PM) software is built for project work — weeks-to-months builds, sub-trades, change orders, draws.
