Pro Tips

  • Order delivered, not picked up, unless your hauling cost is under $30/yard equivalent. Tri-axle trucks (22 tons) cost the same delivery fee as 10-ton trucks for orders that fill them — much better $/ton math on bigger jobs.
  • Compaction note: Gravel (3/4") typically settles 10% when properly compacted with a plate compactor or vibratory roller. We've already added this to your order quantity.
  • For driveways:Lay 2-3" of road base first, compact, then 1.5-2" of decorative gravel on top. Saves money vs. all-gravel installation and produces a more stable driveway.
  • Get 3 quotes before ordering. Quarry prices vary 30-50% by season and supplier — the same crushed stone can be $35/ton at one yard and $55/ton at the next.

How to Use This Calculator

Choose a use-case preset for smart depth/material defaults, or set them manually. Add multiple area sections if your project has different zones. Toggle compaction if you're using compactable material (road base, crusher run). Enter your supplier's price per ton for an accurate cost estimate including delivery, fabric, and edging.

Formula Used

Area (sq ft) varies by shape. Volume (cu ft) = Area × (Depth / 12). Cubic Yards = Cu Ft / 27. Ordered Yards = Yards × Compaction Factor. Tons = Yards × Material Density. Truck Loads = Tons / 10 (standard) or /22 (tri-axle).
