Paver Calculator

Calculate the exact number of pavers, base materials, sand, polymeric sand, and edge restraints needed for your patio, walkway, or driveway project. Supports rectangle, circle, and irregular area shapes with multiple paver sizes and laying patterns.

Pro Tips

  • Order full pallets when possible. Paver pallet pricing is 10-20% better than individual sq ft pricing. A typical pallet is 90-110 sq ft of 4×8 brick, or 50-75 sq ft of larger formats.
  • Geotextile fabric is non-optional. Without fabric between subgrade and gravel base, the base sinks into soil over time. The $0.30/sq ft you save by skipping fabric becomes a callback that destroys job margin.
  • Compact in lifts.Don't dump 6 inches of gravel and compact once. Compact in 2" lifts with a plate compactor for proper density. Skimping here = settling later.
  • Edge restraint matters. Plastic or aluminum paver edging holds the patio together. Skipping edge restraint = pavers spread outward within 1-2 years, especially at high-traffic edges.
  • Polymeric sand application:Sweep into joints when pavers and joints are completely DRY. Then mist with water (don't flood). Activation needs water but not saturation. Done wrong, polymeric sand hazes the paver surface permanently.

How to Use This Calculator

Select your project area shape -- rectangle, circle, or irregular (enter total square footage directly). Choose your paver size, joint width, and laying pattern. The calculator automatically adjusts the waste factor for herringbone patterns. Set your gravel base depth (4-6 inches is standard) and the tool will estimate all materials including pavers, gravel base, sand setting bed, polymeric joint sand, edge restraint, and geotextile fabric.

Formula Used

Pavers per sq ft = 144 / ((paver_width + joint) x (paver_length + joint)). Gravel Base (CY) = Area x Depth (ft) / 27. Sand Setting Bed (CY) = Area x (1/12) / 27. Polymeric Sand coverage varies 30-75 sq ft per 50 lb bag based on paver size and joint width.
