Grout & Thinset Calculator

Estimate grout pounds and thinset mortar bags for a tile job. Accounts for tile size, joint width, tile thickness, trowel size, and waste — so you order the right amount the first time.

Common: 3/8" = 0.375, 1/4" = 0.25

Common: 1/8" = 0.125, 1/16" = 0.0625

Grout needed

0.5

lbs (≈ 1 × 25 lb bags)

Or smaller bags

1

× 10 lb bags

Thinset

2

× 50 lb bags

Tip: grout consumption climbs fast with small tile + wide joints. A mosaic with 1/4" joints can use 3-5× the grout of 12" tile with 1/8" joints over the same area.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the area to tile and your tile dimensions, thickness, and grout joint width. Grout use rises with smaller tiles, wider joints, and thicker tile. Pick your trowel size for thinset coverage (bigger notch = more mortar per square foot = fewer sq ft per bag). The waste factor covers spillage and partial bags.

Formula Used

Grout (lb) = ((L + W)/(L × W)) × joint × thickness × area × 0.55 × waste, dimensions in inches. Thinset bags = (area × waste) ÷ coverage-per-bag, where coverage depends on trowel notch size.
