Pro Tips
- Order full cubes (typically 500-525 bricks per cube) rather than partial — pricing per brick is 10-20% better at full-cube quantities. Plan to use leftover bricks on the next job.
- Mortar mix tip:Type N for above-grade veneer; Type S for load-bearing or below-grade work; Type M for heavy-duty structural. Don't use Type S where Type N is appropriate — Type S shrinks more and can crack veneer over time.
- Order 5% extra wall ties beyond the calculation — corner conditions, jamb returns, and damaged ties during install all consume extras.
- Pallet returns: Many suppliers credit $5-$15 per returned pallet. Mortar bags are NOT returnable but unopened brick pallets often are. Save your receipt and inquire when returning unused material.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the length and height of each wall in feet, then set how many walls you are building. Choose the brick size and mortar joint thickness. If you have window or door openings, enter the count and average dimensions to subtract them from the total area. Adjust the waste factor (5-10% is typical) and select your bond pattern. The results update instantly.
Formula Used
Bricks per sq ft = 144 / ((brick length + mortar joint) x (brick height + mortar joint)). Total Bricks = Net Wall Area x Bricks per sq ft x (1 + Waste%). Mortar Bags (70 lb) = Total Bricks / 1000 x 7. Wall Ties = Net Area / 2.67.
